Science It's A Girl Thing (IDEAL at TTU)
This is a program designed to give young women
a chance to try their hands at science and hopefully to keep them
advancing their interests in science throughout their education. I've
designed several modules of this class depending on the age group I have
needed to teach. In all cases the general theme has been solar system
geoscience. I taught this course each the summer from 2004-2008, and
volunteered again in 2010.
Grades 4-6: Stardust and the Formation of the Solar System
Grades 7&8: Mission Moon Base
Grades 11-12: Choosing a Colonization Site on Mars
Super Saturdays (IDEAL at TTU)
This is a program designed to get young
children interested in science at an early age by targeting their
interests. I participated in this program teaching Dino-Rock. I designed
this interactive class for children in grades K-2 to teach the the
basics about dinosaurs, paleontology, and the rocks and environment that
existed during the time of the dinosaurs. I began teaching this program
in Fall of 2005 and taught it until Fall of 2007. I have since turned
the class over to another capable person in anticipation of the
completion of my degree.
Other Outreach Whenever possible, I like to get out into the
community and meet the needs of local students and teachers in the
schools. I have also participated in Hardin-Simmons University's
Threshold Explorations program for gifted students. Shortly after attending the Stardust Educators Conference, I
brought Stardust to the classroom of a local elementary class taught by
Barbara Carnes at the Lubbock Independent School District (this by far
was my favorite classroom visit). Photos below
